“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.” – Henry David Thoreau
I’m very happy to announce a campaign geared towards helping to fund the initial development of The Quad accessible living facility in order to greatly improve the physical and emotional well-being of those living with an SCI.
After I was discharged from the hospital, I had no other option but to live in a nursing home for 14 months. Fortunately, I was able to eventually move into my own place. I woke up every day while in the nursing home with a passion to work harder to regain my independence and strength. My attitude was “GO GO GO” but I was surrounded by individuals and stuck in an environment that was all “NO NO NO.”
Furthermore, insurance would not cover any of the physical therapy that I needed. Through my faith and the tremendous support of family and friends, I was able to eventually improve my situation. However, there are countless other individuals who are not as fortunate. Most of them do not have the resources to transition into a more comfortable living situation.
That is why I founded Getting Back Up (1) help individuals get the exercise programs and adaptable products they need to improve if insurance will not cover them; (2) and create a better living environment for young, energetic individuals who are so full of life, yet are stuck in a less than desirable environment.
My friend, Katie, approached me about raising some money for GBU by setting up a fundraiser for a half marathon she was running in April. To make a long story short, we talked about making a bigger campaign out of the running events she has planned.
The 50 For 50 Half Marathon Challenge evolved from our conversations. Her goal is to run a half marathon in every state over the next five years. GBU’s goal is to raise $50,000 over that same time frame, which can be used towards helping others in the way we have thus far, as well as beginning work on The Quad.
Anyone planning to participate in any type of running event who would also like to assist and join The Challenge should contact me to find out how you can help.
While ambitious, this is a very exciting challenge and opportunity! I will be linking to it through my website. Please do everything you can to help spread the word.
(All donations are tax deductible. Several companies will match employee contributions.)
