Unfortunately, I received some sad news yesterday. Melanie passed away. She was 42 years old.

Thankfully, her final days were filled with love, care, and plenty of spoiling from her amazing caregivers. She didn’t suffer, and for that, I’m grateful.

Melanie was a huge part of my life, spending nearly a decade by my side before I made the difficult decision to send her back to her original home. It was important for her to spend her later years with her fellow primates, and while letting go was hard, I take comfort knowing she got to enjoy a well-deserved “retirement.”

Her life was full and long—especially for a Capuchin, as they typically live about 25 to 35 years. Melanie, of course, went above and beyond, as she always did.

I can still hear her playful coos in my head, and little reminders of her are scattered all over my home. She’ll always be with me.

Oh, I’m sorry. She was a member of your family. Never easy. Our condolences, and our belief that the animals closest to us greet us into the Heavenly Kingdom. She has a high place there, and she’s having more fun that we can imagine. God bless her, and you, for your loss

I remember Melanie and the video of her that you shared with the students at St Joseph’s school in Sylvania years ago. It really touched the children in a positive way.
Your tribute and compassion for Melanie regarding her life and all that she did for you is so touching. She was such a blessing to you on so many levels.
Scott, thank you for always sharing your journey. You are an amazing writer and your life journey has touched not only my life, but so many lives as you also go out to speak. Thank you for embracing life and showing us all how to live it to the fullest.

What an amazing animal companion Melanie was. We are all truly animals and some of our animal friends are just as valuable and we are just as grateful for them as we would be for the people in our lives. Scott, I really enjoyed reading your post commemorating her life.
You have so much gratitude for her presence in your life. RIP Melanie.
