Last week I received the devastating news that my friend and fellow SCI survivor, Alexandria “Alix” Reese, passed away. She was 34 years old.

I first met Alix nine years ago on the spinal cord wing at Metro Hospital. I was captivated by her smile and positive attitude. We had remained friends over the years and she always made me smile. I last saw her a few years ago when I visited her in Columbus and was once again captivated by her wonderful smile.

According to her family, she passed away peacefully after succumbing to an infection. I often say the easiest part about a spinal cord injury is not being able to move. There are so many more pressing issues always below the surface that people will never be able to appreciate. Unfortunately, Alix’s situation was just another reminder of this.

Her passing comes a year and a half after the deaths of Ryan and Paris. Three friends of mine, all under the age of 35, all gone way too soon. Unfortunately, there are so many others who have also left this world as a result of a spinal cord injury.

Please continue to pray for all the families who have been affected by SCIs. Also, say a special prayer for the scientific and medical communities as they continue to research treatments and a potential cure.

Rest in peace, Alix.

Stand Strong!

Scott
