Unfortunately, Melanie is no longer with me.

She’s okay. In fact, I’d like to think she is better than okay.

Last week she flew back to Helping Hands in Boston to join the other monkeys in retirement. After assisting me for the past 10 years, I felt it was time for her to go home to live out her golden years in a more conducive environment.

For several months I wrestled with the idea that it was time for her to go back to Helping Hands. As much as I would miss her, a myriad of other factors could not be ignored.

First, she will be 39 years old this December. A capuchin monkey in good health like Melanie can expect to live over 40 years, and I want to make sure her final years are enjoyable and relaxing. Second, she no longer spent her time assisting me, but rather serving as a pet. I didn’t feel she was getting the proper enrichment she needs. And finally, I just wanted her to be happy. Yes, I think she was very happy with me and the environment she lived in, however, I felt in my heart she would benefit from being around other monkeys on a regular basis.

Ultimately, I contacted Helping Hands to organize her return home.

I miss her and her crazy antics. I miss her silly sounds echoing through the rooms. I miss sitting in front of the fireplace with her on these cold December evenings. It was a difficult decision, but one I am at peace with and believe was for the best. Melanie was an incredible companion and will always be remembered.

It helps to know that Helping Hands will keep me up to date on her health and livelihood. I look forward to getting updates on her for years to come.

You can check out her retirement home in this video.

Stand Strong!

Scott, I can only imagine how difficult it was to say goodbye. I watched the video and she certainly has a great retirement home.
I’m sure she misses you too.
I remember some of your funny stories about her. She was more than your helper; she became your special friend.

So sorry you have lost your friend. It was truly an act of love on your part, putting Melanie’s happiness over yours. Ryan tried to get a helper monkey. We were interviewed but unfortunately he was turned down. We got a loving dog, Abbey, who proved to be Ryan’s service dog. Stay well.

What a precious picture of the two of you, Scott! I remember meeting Melanie when you were still at your apartment. That was a noble and loving decision and must have been very difficult for you to make. She’ll always be in your heart and you in hers. Happy Retirement, Melanie!

I remember meeting Melanie when I came to your home to do a video for LEAP. I was so impressed with her agility and all she could do. And that she liked to watch TV! She sure has lived to a ripe old age. That is amazing! And how good of you to want the best for her in her last years. That is love – wanting the best for the other. Love the photo of you two!

I cannot imagine your mix of feelings, but I guess it is akin to me parting with my retired service dog and giving her a home to run free in. Still, I was not as dependent on her and had not had her as long as you and Melanie were together. I hope she enjoys retirement as much as Daisy does. Like you, I am blessed with pictures and updates, and she is more or less close enough that I can visit her. You are in my thoughts and prayers! 🤗 🙏
