September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.

Every year about 13,000 spinal cord injuries occur in this country. Obviously, I never expected to find myself in this fraternity, however, as a member I have realized what it really means to be injured.

Sitting in a chair is the easy part. It’s the things that people don’t see, that most injured individuals will encounter some sort of struggle with. Although the loss of independence is tragic, so too are the numerous other losses that occur. For most individuals, financial independence is one of them.

It’s extremely expensive when you’re hurt. Individuals will spend thousands of dollars a year just to “survive” and often are forced to relinquish their goal to “thrive”.

This was the main impetus for the creation of Getting Back Up.

I created the nonprofit organization to help others improve in some way, and to not just survive. As stated in the organization’s charter:

“Getting Back Up seeks to help those living with a spinal cord injury by improving their quality of life TODAY. The focus is on providing goods and services which can help make a difference in someone’s immediate situation. Unfortunately, health and medical insurance often fail to provide individuals with the tools they need to truly improve their quality of life. Getting Back Up exists to help bridge that gap. The organization provides qualified and selected individuals with funding for the purchase of adaptable products and participation in exercise-based recovery programs. These programs and products have been proven to greatly improve the physical and emotional well-being of the injured individual.”

I’m extremely proud to say that GBU has helped almost 2 dozen recipients with exercise therapy and adaptable products that have made a difference in improving their immediate situation. However, there are so many more who need help.

This is where you come in.

For anyone who’s ever wished they could somehow help but weren’t quite sure how, now is your chance. Not that you need to wait until September, but sometimes a little reminder helps.

The most direct way to assist others is through a 100% tax-deductible donation that will help improve the quality of life for a future GBU recipient.

If you’re not in a position to donate, you can still make an impact by helping to share the message. Today, it’s easier than ever to spread awareness through social media. You can post, like, share, tweet, pin, snap or choose another method to let people know about Getting Back Up’s mission.

Finally, you can do both.

And if so inclined, share the image below.
