“Believe and you will see, not see and then believe.” – Unknown
There are a few things I’ve always wanted to try at least once. One of them is shaving my head completely bald. I know that might sound weird, but for some reason it’s always been on my list. In the past, I’ve always let things dissuade me from going through with it, whether it was looking professional at work or being afraid of how bizarre I might look with a shaved head. Fortunately, I now have my reason that supersedes any excuse to not do it.
I have signed up to participate in St. Baldrick’s annual event on Saturday, March 15th at the Rocky River Brewing Company. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation exists to help fund the most promising research advancements that will help make the greatest impact for children living with cancer. I was shocked to learn that 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the US, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease – more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined. And those are just the statistics for children. When you consider how many people of all ages, race and sex are affected by cancer, the numbers are simply staggering.
I will be participating in the event in support of Shane Haddad, the son of Eric and Amy Haddad. In 2010, Eric, a high school friend of mine, received the devastating news that his son had brain cancer. Shane was only 4 years old. However, he has continued to fight incredibly hard and shown remarkable resilience these past several years. In fact, as I write this Shane is celebrating his 8th birthday today! In spite of dealing with their own challenges, Eric and Amy have shown me incredible support over the past several years and remain great friends.
While the event will benefit children living with cancer, I will also be participating in honor of all those I know who are also battling various forms of cancer. Recently, one of my best friends was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and thanks to the power of prayer and wonderful medical treatment is doing remarkably well. I also recently lost my aunt Mary Ann to cancer. For them, others I know, as well as friends who have lost loved ones to cancer, I can’t wait to shave my head and help raise support and money towards one day finding a cure.
If you would like to make a donation, please do so by visiting My St. Baldrick’s page. Every bit helps!
Thank you for your prayers and support!
